The historic Plaza Colon, named for Christopher Columbus (whose Spanish surname is Colon), serves as the city center of the town of Mayaguez. It is a major gathering spot for residents and tourists, and is the setting for many special events throughout the year. Plaza Colon features a large statue of the explorer, as well as over a dozen other bronze statues.
